Millions of UK employees pay tax through PAYE every year. Many don’t realise they may be entitled to claim work-related expenses and receive money back from HMRC.
Tax refunds aren't just for self-employed people.
Eligibility
Do ANY of these sound like you?
*Not all travel qualifies. For example, ordinary commuting between home and a permanent workplace is usually excluded.
You travel between workplaces
You wear a uniform or specialist work clothing
You pay professional membership fees
You work in construction, healthcare, education, transport, engineering, or a similar industry
If so, you could be entitled to a tax refund.
Not every expense qualifies for tax relief. That’s why we offer a free eligibility check to help determine whether you may be entitled to claim.
Things Most Employees Don't Realise
Here’s what many PAYE employees are missing out on and why it’s worth checking.
You can usually claim for up to 4 previous tax years
Many people have never claimed before and could be entitled to a refund covering several years.
The refund comes from HMRC, not your employer
Claiming tax back doesn’t cost your employer anything and won’t affect your wages
You may still be able to claim for previous jobs
Even if you’ve changed employer or left the job completely, you may still be entitled to claim for earlier tax years.
You don’t need to complete a tax return
Most PAYE employees never submit a Self Assessment tax return and can still qualify for a refund.
The important thing isn't your job title — it's whether you've incurred qualifying work-related expenses.
How Much Could You Be Owed?
Many successful claims include expenses from multiple tax years
Because HMRC normally allows claims to be backdated for up to four tax years, refunds can often be worth significantly more than people expect.
*Based on average expense refunds received by Express Tax Claims clients during the 2024/25 tax year. Individual circumstances vary.
